Ugh! snow outside... Let's start some interesting threads.

I need entertained, so lets start some good carbine threads. Actually the snow on the ground is not what has me bummed, it is the fact I am admitted to the Reno VA Hospital with a blood clot in my lung (Pulmonary Embolism)!

Hahaha, I thought I had two weeks of bronchitis, but my wife drug me over here because she didn't want to wake up next to a dead man... At least my wife had the forethought to have me bring my laptop since I will be stuck here for at least a couple days... DANG, getting old sucks!

Hey, really sorry to hear about your health issue, I'll be praying for you.
My first M1, My Dad gave to me for my 13 birthday, back in 1970. I can't remember what make it was, (since I've owned several of them over the years), but at the time, you could order 3 for $99. I shot the crap out of that thing, probably/ possible over 10,000 rounds, as I had an unlimited supply of ammo. I eventually blew the gas chamber plug out of it.
What great memories it gives me.

My Standard Products is my all time favorite carbine. It is 100% original and unmolested! I haven't really had a bad experience but as for the one that got away? 15 years ago I got rumor of an Irwin Pedersen at a garage sale for $350.00. I got there and the new owner was loading it in his truck. It was a post war rebuild but he ended up getting it for $$275.00. ARG!!!

You should see what it's like when you get really old. PE is nothing to fool around with, most people find out they have one at their funeral. Glad to hear that you are OK.

Most disappointing thing? Years ago a friend died and another friend was disposing of his guns privately. I walked in and some guy had just bought the Colt 25 automatic the guy had, wonderful condition...serial number (can't remember exact number of zeros) 0005 . Sold it for like $100!

Wife's are a necessary evil sometimes ( just kidding ladies ! ). When I was married my wife would always force me to the Dr., Dentist and the Optician because I needed it . Face it we're all little boys when it comes to Medical care . My Carbine story is a buddy of mine had an Uncle who Willed all his firearms to him. I was over his place one day and he was proudly showing his inheritance . His Uncle had some dated sporting arms . They looked like the old Gun Magazine Ads from the early '60s . Weird Optics old fashioned slings the whole bit . He had a "Last Ditch" Arisaka and weird off the wall non U.S. Carbines . In one felt red case he pulls out an M-1 Carbine . My heart skipped a beat . I noticed a thin rust coat on the Barrel but other than that it was in great condition. It was an early War Winchester with all early parts except the bolt and sight. I offered my buddy 600.00 for it (this was 13 yrs ago) he said no because it was his Uncles . He wanted to keep it out of respect which I can see. Well over the years I would ask if he sell it the answer was the same no . Well one day I'm over his house for something and I asked if I could see it . After digging around for it he found it . I must have had that puppy dog look when I asked if he wanted to part with it. He sat there for a second and said " You can Have it ! " . The last time I felt that happy is when I got my first " G.I.Joe " Action figure ( not with the life like hair ! ) back in the 60's .

The one I wish I had still was: the 1960s DCM Winchester with the flip sight and type I band that I got in the early 1980s I shot less than 1.5" at 100 yrds from the bench with it. It was all original (as far as I can remember) with flat bolt and push button safety. Unfortunately I was stupid and thought the ones with adjustable sights and bayonet lug and sold it - STUPID ME! It was nicer than the un-messed with Inland I had to sell.

The most disappointing carbine I had was: the transitional Inland I had with Type III sight and type II barrel band, all original. I like it because it was identical to the Inland my dad carried on Iwo Jima. I was disappointed because the muzzle would swallow an M2 ball round, including case mouth! at 25 yards I could usually hit a pop can or come close, but at 100 yards it would not hit a 12x12 target with regularity. Considering I am a one or two carbine at a time guy, and it is my primary house/farm weapon, I sold it It wasn't about to depend on it.

The one I am/was happiest with: actually my current Winchester un-messed with 5.7 is top of my list. It has the advantage less than 1 ME, of Type II band and Type III sight for "shootability" (and it does shoot!), yet is is original as left the factory in Summer of 1944. It is the same configuration as my dad's on Iwo, though Winchester instead of Inland.

I am not a USGI Carbine snob. I have had a VERY EARLY Universal (almost all GI parts), A Plainfield, and even am Iver Johnson. They were all decent little carbine for the price.

With that said, the WORST carbine I ever owned was an Auto Ordnance. In 2008, I had a NIB Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine. I wanted a flip sight carbine in WWII trim for a shooter and shadow box with my dad's WW II stuff. it was a real tuna... I had terrible problems with it. It would not feed a full 15 round GI mag without several failures to feed, and it took three tries with customer service to get a stock that fit correctly and did not cause the handguard to fly off during firing (it would not take a GI stock or some GI parts). I sold it to a re-enactor who was going to plug the barrel for blanks, thus saving an original from the indignity of a barrel plugging job.

Shortly after that, I worked part time at a gunshop part time for couple years. They sold three while i was there, and all three came back for warranty issues. He would no longer sell or order the Auto Ordnance Carbines after that.

Hey, get well soon! I don't have a favorite or worst carbine, but I do have a story about the one that got away - wasn't a carbine, but an '03 Springfield. Wife and I were at a gunshow about 15 years ago and a kid about 18 was carrying a rifle with a 'For Sale' sign on it. He said his Grandpa had died and the rifle was given to him. I only recognized it as an '03 because my older brothers both had them when we were kids. He was asking $125, but it didn't look right to me because of a polished bolt and a couple other things - thought it had been messed with. I passed on it, and an older gentleman probably in his early 80's pulled out the cash quickly and bought it on the spot. He then pointed out to me the features, such as polished bolt, star gauged barrel, and a couple other things that distinguish an '03 Springfield "National Match." I now own an '03 Remington, but probably worth a fraction of what that NM would be worth now. :banghead: - Bob
