Bidding Patterns
M1 garand WWII 1942 Springfield CMP Excellent NR : Semi Auto Rifles at GunBroker.com
M1 garand WWII 1942 Springfield CMP Excellent NR : Semi Auto Rifles at GunBroker.com
I have been following this particular Garand, mostly for the barrel.
It appears that the first sale was destroyed by shill bidders, attempting to discover just how high a bidder had actually bid, and was IMMEDIATELY reposted. I notice that the current high bidder has not purchased anything in quite a while; like most of the other bidders.
It has been mentioned to me that some sellers seem to attract shill bidders with low or no feedback, who run up the price, and some have said that some sellers maintain a bank of alter egos or friends, for the same purpose.
I guess the idea is not to bid any sooner than necessary.:eek::crying:

Interesting rifle though. The barrel has a very square crown. More than most. Is that a rebarrel at CMP...or is that correct?
-
I'm figuring it is a cmp rebarrel; I think the muzzle is orig, pretty similar to other early ex cond I have.

Very interesting barrel...I agree it's likely original spec, just haven't see one like it. You'll do well if you can get it and use it. You'll be able to re-coupe money on the rest. I think you probably understand the bidding on line about as well as it's to be understood. Dishonest bidders and sellers, shill bidding, shadow bidders...thing is, I've seen this gun before on here. Or maybe it was on CMP forum...?

This rifle did appear on this website in June 2010 and generated a discussion of barrel date in relation to receiver date.
In my data base I have this rifle showing up in April 2008 by the current seller that is now on Gunbroker. I noted the website as "battlerifle" but I didn't save any information from the post.

Shills
Why would anybody but the seller try to run up the price?
-
I agree, but I was trying to be "circumspect" about the bidders. Like voting, the dead come out regularly to bid.
-
Maybe he got some family members and friends to join in? Not like that hasn't happened before :ugh:

Shills 2
I've seen it on other stuff, the shill gets stuck when the real bidder drops. Then the item comes back a few days later, a dead giveaway. I wouldn't bid on that item if I were drooling over it. Scummers are scummers.
