Learning to adjust magazines, I have one that the lips are adjusted the way I want to try, but I find that the bolt head hits the lips firmly in this position. I was wondering if there is any way to adjust the front height of the magazine to allow me to lower the front only just a bit, maybe a millimeter or two.
I can pull down on the mag body, but it springs back up when released. I don't really know for sure what part of the mag catches in the front.
The mag does not catch in the front. It is meant to fit tightly into the mag well.
When properly fittted, the back side of the mag fits flush against the inside of the body (receiver) and the trigger bow, and the front against a small protruding dimple underneath the feed ramp. You will have to continue working on the front feed lips until you get it to feed properly without binding the bolt.
If you still can't get it to work, it might be easier to find another mag.
Further to Jakes comments....... I feel that the sort-of lack of response is because magazine fitting was not an exact science because it was individually fitted to a rifle, hence being numbered to it. It must fit exactly lengthways and be a tight fit at the rear where it engages the magazine catch. It should be impoissible to pull it down or even move it at the front. Once you've got that right, it's the feed lips. Before you go much further with the round nose pliers, heat the lips to cherry red and allow to cool. They'll 'work' better like this, be more forgiving to the tweaking and be far less liable to fracture
