I've got my Dad's Remington Rand 1911A1 that he brought back from Korea in 1953. He had the serial number buffed off so I can't determine the date manufactured in that way. It's got the late slide marking on the left side, serrated slide stop and mainspring housing. The FJA marking is large and angles down in front of the left grip. I'm guessing 1944 but the thing I haven't found any info on is the hammer - narrow and serrated (not checkered). The barrel is marked F. What say the experts?

That sounds like an Ithaca hammer, late 43-45. Some replacement hammers were also ribbed like the one you described. It is possible that is an Ithaca frame with a Remington Rand slide. This is possible because Ithaca frames were also marked FJA for final inspection. It is a shame that the serial number is buffed. The F on the barrel is for Flannery, which would be correct for 44-45 Remington Rand/Ithaca.
Any other marks on the frame other than the ones you described?
You can look at the M 1911A1 U.S.ARMY and tell if it is an Ithaca or Remington Rand. The Ithaca is large and strung out where the Remington Rand is small and close together. This shows the size of the Remington Rand.

Thank you both for the replies! And yes, after more research the receiver appears to be an Ithaca. The serrated hammer, mainspring housing, and slide stop all match Ithaca parts I've found pictures of online. The FJA marking also matches the ones on late Ithacas. The final clue was the nonmatching P proofmarks on receiver and slide. The pistol is not a collector item, but it was Dad's and that makes it priceless to me and will one day belong to one of my sons!

Just inform the heirs that with the serial number removed it is unlawful to possess. The chances of anything coming of the erased serial number are slim, but it is illegal.
