Barrel Gauges? | Trade Me

The kind that thread on the end of cleaning rod by the look of them.
What is the brass (?) bit on the end?
I have a set of those the brass head is harder than copper will pass down the bore but not damage it whilst it is of a larger dia than the body of the gauge, screw onto a rod usually a P&H thread then you gently push them from the breech end and feel for restrictions to denote coppering or feel roughness perhaps pitting they vary in their increments half thou E.g .2290, .2295, .3015 of an inch and so on stamped on the brass end usually.
Or you can just use one free hand to check the muzzle very carefully brass end first in of course.
The brass or copper "caps" on these appear to be smaller than the gauge diameter so perhaps they were just a convenient way to mark the gauge clearly and easily with the maker's name, size etc. rather than trying to acid etch, or engrave/stamp the gauge before it was hardened and ground.
If the 125, 150, 175, 301, 302, 303 etc. refers to the diameter, as it seems to, either I don't know enough about gauge markings or there is something else going on as the 125 gauge appears about the same size as the 303 gauge.
Price certainly seem to have gone up since we started talking about them!
Thanks Rob; re the 'sizes' you just articulated what I was thinking!
