One on ebay on Wednesday, may still be there
That one has gone, went for a pretty penny too! (Was watching it)
The Enfield clip-in adapter comes up fairly regularly from the same e-bay vendor, so keep an eye out , they may very well list more again. I have got a couple from that source, and also from D.S. Solutions, although they don't show them in stock at present.
These little adapters can take a surprising amount amount of work to fit - they SHOULD be a simple push-fit, but not all clip guides seem to be the same internally. The side "pips" won't always fit down in the grooves properly, and so bend the adaptor enough that the front edges come into the space where the charger needs to go.. If you try to take material off the corners to make it fit, this weakens the unit and it may snap in two. Have found it more satisfactory to reduce the size of the side pips carefully until they go in properly.
I have seen one Sterling type adapter come up, they do not seem to be as readily available.
In the meantime, have you tried loading 7.62 with a standard .303 charger?
I did this prior to getting the adapters fitted, it works quite well. I found that if I modified the loading technique by slipping my right forefinger under the nose of the top round, and then with the right thumb near the charger as usual, would rock the 7.62s down into the mag without too much trouble. A quick push down with the thumb after the charger was removed ran the mag follower down and sorted the rounds out for length inside the mag so they would feed properly.
Westley Richards used to sell them, about 25 years ago, and more recently AJ Parker used to sell them. I suspect someone who bought up their stock is where they are coming from.
Enfield made 60,000 of the little ADAPTOR, Charger, Bridge plus the magazines for the doomed L8 rifles and the Indian Army 'Aid for India' agreement (see The Guns of Dagenham for the sorry saga of ineptitude). The magazines were utilised for the L42's but the adaptors were disposed of when Enfield closed.
Someone told me (was it you Colin...... Ensci??) that the first L42's sent for user trials had them fitted but they were not a requirement for obvious reasons and when the rifles were returned to be brought up to 'standard' formalised spec, they were taken off. That's why you might find the tiny little fixing hole on some early L42's
Stratton mentions the L42's having the charger guide adaptor in his book on the No 4. No-one seems to say anything about L42's having them now; but if some had them to begin with, but now are removed that would be a good explanation.
Fixing hole? To suit the the hole near the front of the left hand side of the adaptor? Good idea too, if it was just a press fit, it might come out if you struck a tight fitting charger.
Yes..... the adaptor came as a kit and came with a flat head rivet that went through the adaptor into a tight hole in the side of the charger bridge. So if anyones got an early XL or L42, that's the reason.
Another useless bit of lost Enfield info
I've still got lots of the little rivets!
