SVT 40 carbine??
Need some input on this. At the gun show today, I saw an SVT 40 that was shortened. At first I thought Bubba, but got to looking around on the net and discovered that there actually was a carbine version of this rifle. This particular example had been refinished, I totally forgot to check for SA markings, but the work looked 'right', as in not crudely done. Guy was asking $325 for it. Anyone ever heard of these carbines? Never knew these existed. Is there anything in particular I should look for to determine real or fake? Thoughts most appreciated.

the design existed but the Russians never officially fielded any. some where crudely done in the field, but more than likely Bubba.

There is almost no chance that it is a "real" carbine. It is a very similar situation as the "T26" or carbine Garand. Some prototypes were made, but if you were to find a real SVT carbine chances are it is on the other side of glass in a Russian museum.

As I understand it, there was a SKT 40 made up by the Finns, and some carbines made out of damaged SVT 40s by the Soviets. And then only a handful of purpose built carbines that, as was pointed out, never fielded.
Guess I need to take a closer look at it.

There were a few carbines among all the imports that came in several years ago. All of the ones I bought were rifles, but I saw a couple around gun shows and wasn't smart enuf to buy one.
I've thought about making my own, even bought an import for that purpose, but never got around to doing it.

Mikesm44 is correct. I see all sorts of cut-down rifles offered on the internet, from flintlocks right through to SLRs. Almost always obviously Bubba-ed. And almost always claimed to be an oh-so-rare cavalry or police carbine. In the majority of cases they were probably just a desperate attempt to salvage a gun with a ruined muzzle, or a conversion of a full-length rifle to what some term a truck gun, but to my sternly traditionalist eyes all to often just looks like FUBAR.

Well, it will probably be at this weekends gun show again. If it is, I'll take a better look at it. The seller made no claims about it being rare at all. In fact there was no story to it at all. He said it was just an 'old Russian rifle'.
Eager to see it again.

Some SVT-40's that came from Finland came to Canada and the barrels were cut down and added a sight on top of the gas port and cut the end of the stock and added an ugly rubber but pad this was done by the Globco co.
