carbine safety

I have an universal m1 carbine, serial 118---. I have read that "3rd generation" ones were capable of firing out of battery. Does this apply to my earlier production?

Welcome to the Carbine forum. Lots of nice and helpful guys here. Like Bob above. He posted a couple good sites to visit that talk about after market carbines.
I personally don't or have ever owned one. So not anymore help. Check those out, even if they doesn't answer all your questions they are informative.
We also have a search feature you might try.
I see we live pretty close, about an hour apart. Do you go to the CAl Expo show?

If you go to the link above for "safety" and scroll down the page. The bolt on the left is a later production Universal. With no protruding bottom "tail", the carbine hammer can hit the firing pin out of battery. VERY hazardous. If your bolt has a tail on the firing pin like the one on the right, there is less chance of out of battery discharge, provided the receiver has the bridge with the safety notch. I have seen Universals with a GI style bolt and no safety bridge, too. Those can discharge out if battery, also.
