Hello all,
Obviously I'm new here so I hate to just come out and ask for help... but help. My uncle gave me an M1 carbine that belonged to my grandfather and he believes that it was acquired in 1967. Therefore it's been in the family since then. It is a National Postal Meter with an Underwood barrel. It appears to be a mix master, which is fine by me. However the stock has an odd stamp in the sling well, as shown in the pictures below. The buttplate is odd too and is the original that came with it.
The story behind this one is unique, and I can't confirm it because gramps died in 06, but here it goes. Gramps was a sergeant for the Detroit PD in 1967 (this I can confirm). The riots started on a Sunday (confirmed) and the federal government was closed so no backup was coming. I don't know if it was gramps personally, but police broke into the Light Guard Armory on 8 mile to "requisition" the long guns inside. This was gramp's gun. After the riots he was allowed to keep it if he donated $1 to the NRA. Gramps was not a shooter or tinkerer so it's a safe bet he never shot this or messed with it in 40 years. In fact, somewhere in my uncle's house is supposedly an original magazine for this gun with tracer rounds in it (maybe lost). He DID take it on the family camping trips for protection from wildlife, but that's it.
The stock is an M2 potbelly with no other markings and it looks varnished. The sling was a green post war. The handguard is a pretty nice Rock-Ola not varnished. The buttplate is rusty from the leaky oiler that leaked out years ago. I've spent hours searching the internet and I give up. Does anyone know this stamp or buttplate? Feel free to ask me any questions.
Thanks
Matt
