Long Branch 4(T) markings on butt socket

With the number of posts recently about Long Branch snipers I noticed from the detailed photos and those on the Knowledge Library that beneath the serial number stamped on the butt socket that lower down beneath on the socket are usually a single letter followed by one or two numbers. Does any one know what these numbers are for or if they follow any particular sequence?

I have the same question. You can find this on various Long Branch Rifles. This is a 1944 Long Branch, Not a sniper.

I became interested in them around the mid or late '90's, I don't remember much other than making long lists of serial numbers and production dates, and IIRC they appear to start part way thru production, rather than from day one.

I believe them to be similar to "Steel Batch Numbers".
