Besides the SA80 and Colt M16 chambering (testing) of the 4.85mm cartridge, were any other assault weapons tested ? It is my understanding that this was a very accurate cartridge. There were some wildcats such as the 5mm/223 plus the factory 204 Ruger cartridge which are very close in performance. Examples in photo 4,85mm, 224 Winchester and 222 Rem Special which became the 5.56mm

Not that I know of. An EM2 may have been re-barrelled as one was for the 6.25mm trials but I will check next time I am at the NFC in Leeds.
Prior to the 49mm case length 4.85mm round a lot of the initial work was carried out on the 44mm long case which although the same calibre was known as the 5mm in Britain. it is shown second from left in attached picture.

Tony, were any of the collared rounds actually cycle/fire tested, or were they just mock-ups?

I guess they changes the length to avoid it being dropped into a 5.56 chamber and fired.
Jonny - AFAIK they were only made as mock-ups.
As for the change in length, the main reason was to give more support for the long bullet.
