M1 Carbine Information request

I am thinking about purchasing my first M1 Carbine and I want to make sure at least as sure as I can be that it is from WWII. Anyone willing to share their opinion, what do you think of this ad?

"Late WW2 probably 1944 M1 Carbine. NRA antique Grade VG to Fine – Inland Div General Motors model – correct barrel, receiver, slide, & stock. it has a Rock-ola hand guard, Winchester bolt, IBM trigger group, and Has the correct push button safety. I am including two 15 rd. mags, butt stock 2 mag holder, sling, and oiler. I am also including an original USGI M4 model bayonet- Leather handle (leather VG), Blade (VG) metal on sheath and the guard are only fair but it mounts and functions perfectly"

The serial number that shows is 5345xxx

That is a very nice looking carbine but there are not enough important details shown to provide a decent opinion on value. That stock appears to be a beautiful high-wood with no gross evidence of sanding and could be very valuable if the original cartouche and sling well markings are present. The metal looks like original finish but the bayonet barrel band is a replacement and has probably damaged the barrel finish irreparably. The adjustable rear sight could be original to the receiver in that Inland serial number range but we don't know if the barrel is original because the barrel date stamp is not shown or noted. All of the other parts are of mixed manufacture (other than Inland) and certainly replacements. We don't know if there is an import mark on the barrel or receiver which could seriously reduce the market value. I can't see the sling, which could add to value if original WWII type. All in all it's still a re-built mix-master and even if the stock is perfect and there are no import marks I don't think it's worth more than about $1000, including the bayonet and mags.

But, prices vary by location and the market has gotten kind of wild within the past year so if the stock is great and there is no import mark the asking price may not be too over the top. JMHO

If you want our help here and details, you'll need all the pics you can get. It's important. Otherwise, you'll have what Chips has offered as your only opinion. We don't have much to go on.

But at least we can answer one question - the carbine was made in WWII - they all were. :) But they were in service for decades after that and most of them were modified with updated parts before finally being taken out of U.S. service.

Sure would like to see more pictures of that one, especially both sides of the buttstock without the pouch. That buttplate looks more like an Underwood. If it is an Inland, it could be right for that stock but not for the S/N range of the carbine. - Bob

Picture three appears to be a D clip sling. The sling, oiler, pouch and 2 mags add $70-$90. Depending on the maker and condition of the bayonet it could add $100+. So that puts the carbine around $1000-$1025.
