What a coincidence as I just finished reading "If You Survive" by George Wilson. The story of his time on the Siegfried line. Some of the conflict took place during The Battle of the Bulge which took much of the news. Gives an idea of the size of the tank traps.
A few years ago, I knew a man that helped build the Siegfried line. He'd been 16 in 1945...quite the story.
The guy who built my fieldstone chimneys spotted for German AA -- Willi Voll was 14 at the time and would wake up the sleeping gunners when the B-17s came over.

The local silversmith was personally decorated by Der Fuhrer for heroism on the Eastern Front. The certificate was hanging over the mantel for a while.
