Under cover of darkness, the GI’s, on hands and knees, probed the minefields with their bayonets, first locating the trip-wires for the anti-personnel “Bouncing Betty” and “Schu” mines. This action was never discovered by the Germans until after the fields had been breached and the attacks on the occupied pill-boxes begun! When the way was cleared, our tanks began to roll through the breaches, artillery smoked the pill-boxes to deny their occupants vision of the attackers and, within 2 days, all oppositions from the Siegfried Line was history. So much for Hitler’s vaunted Siegfried Line!
