So I bought a No.4 Mk1 that was packed with grease from importation and after I clean the bore, I see this(pictured) how is it possible that this passed the build process and at least 1 FTR without being caught? barrel is original serials to the receiver and what lucky B'stards fired this without blowing up?

Wow is that actually a hole or corrosion pitted the rifling.
That's actually a pic I posted on surplusrifle forum (and my avatar at militaryfirearms forum for about 4 years) and yes .... that's exactly what it looked like. No optical illusion.
He asks a good question. How did it get all the way to 2014 like that? At least two of them.
As the OP on the other forum described his (looked the same as this, he noted) as I (and he) ran a cleaning patch down the bore it loosened up momentarily and a look down the bore revealed that image!! The rifle was a well worn '43 Maltby from Classic Arms and returned and promptly and courteously replaced.

It looks like a bad bulge to me. Pretty sure that's it. So it could have occured any time to date. Can you feel it on the outside of the barrel?
Looks like what we refer to as "ringing". Caused by firing with (usually) oil in the bore. Result, an expanded ring, should be detectable on the outside as tbone suggests.
yes Lngstrt this is your photo, I used it because of how insanely a perfect match it is to my bore same everything! if mine wasn't a BSA, I actually wonder if I somehow ended up with yours lol
the exterior of the bore does not show a bulge, the outer profile is very uniform.
So, let me ask you guys this, would you shoot it?
Would I shoot it. No. But not because it would blow-up or split, but because the rifle would immediately become noticeably more inaccurate. But not nevessarily so!
I saw a couple of thin walled (?) barreled L1A1 rifles where they'd very probably bulged during the previous days run-downs when the muzzles were soaked in water and probably range mud. Been used for the remainder of the day PLUS all of the next day and the next too. Only noticed when stripped for cleaning on the following Monday. He said he'd had a rubbish score and the rifle '....shot like 5hit....' (his words not mine)
I am beside myself with this one, its such a beautiful rifle and with 3 "kabooms" under my belt already I'm actually quite terrified to even fire it just once. I am going to try to find a sported model with a good uncut barrel and maybe swap the parts. I bought some stuff to make this into a faux "T" I could just sell them and the bolt and receiver from this and do one hell of a swap haha
First thing I looked for was a bulge on the outside of mine. I couldn't feel one. How about on yours, crazy4milsurps?
