Longbranch No.5 MkI?

Dear Fellow Enfield Enthusiasts,

I was under the impression that all No.5 MkI "Jungle Carbines" were built by Fazackerly and BSA Shirley. I saw a Longbranch Jungle Carbine on GB which made me question my impression.

In other news, I sighted in my own No.5 MkI today at 50 yards off a bench rest - first time it's been fired since the mid-1970s. It bucked pretty much as I had remembered and shot well with perfect windage but seemed to shoot low. 3-shot groups under an inch has me encouraged. Shooting Privi Partizan 174 grain BTSP. Will back it up to 100 yards next week.

I also thought that it was only those two manufacturers. Skennerton lists only Fazakerley and BSA as manufacturers. Maybe it was a No4 converted or perhaps a trials rifle? Interesting find.

Long Branch did a prototype No5 but if there is more than one is unknown

You need to ask P L what was done in Maylasyia regarding No5 repair/rebuild.

We re-bodied them but only in Mk1 bodies but didn't chop the bodies about. This was simply to send out to the foreign armies/Pacific rim/Commonwealth nations using the facilities before the poms shut up shop in the Far East and it meant that less stuff was brought home. Fiji was a nation who we rebuilt tons of stuff for as I recall and the small Singapore Army

Perhaps this "rare" No.5 was separated at some time from the "super rare" cutaway magazine. Someone should spend foolishly and reunite the two. I am sure it will increase the value of the parts to $35 or $40. If not, there is always the nickel plating route to fame and fortune.

It was quite common for some dodgy US companies to make "tanker" carbines and other bubbas as there is a price differential. So what you have seen is a fraudelent pass off. Now if you have got it for next to nothing, for fun, no biggee.
