Im looking for some mk7 ammo to use as a base line for no4 testing. Given its age now, what would be the "best" to look for and what would be best to avoid?

the best would be any 60's production that was stored properly all these years the stuff not to get will have a blue fluffy look to it.
I have had good luck with RG42, WRA42, K65 & DAC44 that was all still in the original sealed tins on belts or in boxes. I had some RG42 that was on clips but it was 50-50
I have some great Greek 80s dated HXP. That's what I would look for. It WILL be expensive.
I would also go with HXP, or the newer Prvi Partizan production with the 174(?) grain bullet.
As you are in Kiwiland, see if you can pick up some MF stamped Aussie ammo, anything from '55 on is still okay.
The last lot I chronographed as a base for reloading yielded amazingly consistant figures.
MF56
1. 2384fps LO 2379
2. 2379fps HI 2384
3. 2382fps AV 2382
4. 2382fps ES 5.62
5. 2383fps SD 1.73
If I could get my reloads that close, I'd be a very happy chappy.
The below is my 5 cents worth's, its an observation of my experience only, not as a statement of fact. I was always told by my father and several of his friends (who were considered quite good shots back in the aussie fullbore days of .303 - pre the late 60's move to Omark's and 7.62mm - i.e. They were considered good enough to be very competitive on the OZ Fullbore scene) All of them considered the aussie manufactured ammo of 1957 to be the best - the best they could get then anyway. I inherited a quantity of ammo from my father (all in very good condition) and can comment as follows.
OZ manufactured 56,57,58 will group thru my 2 x No 4's at 300 to 600 yrds, as good as anything I can reload - as good as new brass with Sierra 174gr BTHP and ADI 2208.
(Note - I have only ever shot the above ammo in Fullbore style shooting - not of a rest at 100m for group size) Haven't had any real joy with any RG stuff - 54, 55, 56 - the groups just are not as tight and get the odd flyer.
The last stuff RG made in the early '70s (7z) has been pretty good when I have been able to try it.
It's not military Mk VII ammo, but I've found the Federal .303 ammo with a 180gr JSP projectile to be excellent - great quality, accurate, clean and reasonably priced (at least as far as commercial ammunition goes).
I've been using Privi Partisan 174 FMJBT. it's Serbian.
Accurate out of my No.4 MK2. Then I reload the brass.
I tried to get some of that but the FMJ version is not avalable in NZ.

Its for fullbore target shooting. So the 57 ish OZ looks a good one to ask around for. I seem to have a vertical stringing problem on my no4 mk2s and Im wondering on resonance as I have re-bedded them both hence I need some mil spec ammo to act as a base line as Im using my own reloads.
