Interesting. I had a '28 until just a short time ago and an M1 many years ago. It always made sense to be able to lock the bolt closed so you couldn't catch the actuator and accidentally fire, but you couldn't do it. It may well be a field mod...
I saw a wartime Armourers booklet about the repair policy for Thompson guns and that particular mod didn't feature. It would have to be done on a grinder at a well equipped Field Workshop as we did on the later Brens where we incorporated such a modification. However, there were plenty of money saving ideas that Armourers should use to save using very expensive spare parts. Such as modifying P'14 butt plates to replace damaged Thompson ones or using No4 plates. There was no restriction on the amount of butt/grip/fore-end patches where it was usually no more than three.....
There was also a leter note clipped in to the effect that where US troops are located nearby, Armourers should associate themselves with their US counterparts to increase their knowledge of the weapons systems and foster greater relations. What it didn't exactly say was that they should also scrounge any spares they need instead of using the very valuable UK Ordnance stocks that we'd purchased up front, in gold, that'd made their way to us across the U-Boat infested Atlantic!
