a brief range trip with a Mauser C96 "Red Nine"

Had it at the range the other day just to see how much higher the POI was from lowest to highest sight settings (50 and 500m,repectively) at 25yds.

Note how level the bore appears even with the sights cranked all the way up!

Very brief! 15rds expended in total this day.

Turns out there's about a 25in difference. Was mostly done out of curiosity after reading discussion about Jerry Miculek's 1000yd balloon busting stunt with a 9mm revolver...POI at 25yds with the 1000yd zero would be very roughly 68" high if my SWAG is close.

Besides, it hadn't been exercised in a while!

As for Jerry's feat, I watched it and would have to seen it personally to believe it. He seemed confused when he was telling us how far it was and the ad said "Breaks a balloon at half mile" which is 880 yards. He hit the plate low left so the bullet fragmented...you could see the plate in the camera background so I think it was much closer than all that. I remember how small the 8 ft screens looked at 1000 yds over the sights of an FN...his plate was about 3 x 3...

The LP.08 (Artillery) Luger sights were compensated for rotational drift of the bullet. As the rear sight is raised it moves to the left to compensate for rotational drift to the right.

Same thing I say every time I heard about Elmer Kieth's claim of killing a running elk at 500 yards with a .45 Colt revolver.

It's apparently an established range, with "1000" above the steel plates utilized. Look to be roughly 3'x 4'. Have yet to watch the video with sound, as i was rather more amazed at the number of folk that don't think it can be done. That he did it on the second round makes the stunt only slightly less probable. "Beaten zones" and all that come to mind...

Used to connect regularly at 300m on a steel plate about the same size with an Argentine M1927 and a circa 1924 Colt Govn't Model that went to the Argentine Navy. Just had to find the right tree top at which to aim!

I loved my old "red 9". The world is truly a safer place now that it's been melted down:rolleyes:

Harry, with all sincerity, I say that I truly feel your pain. I think at my age, with my appreciation of history and unique mechanisms (such as the Mauser 96), I'd rather lose a leg than see my 'red 9' - if I was fortunate enough to ever have one, go to the smelters.
