Lee Enfield .22 conversion lots of pictures

Hi guys i just bought his rifle , appears like its not been fired shiny bore etc. although the stock seems to be sanded a little , painted metalwork, empty magazine shell all the numbers match , all the wood is stamped 15 on the inside .

Im amazed anyone recognised the Springfield M87 .although built as a trainer version of the M1 Garand , it never was adopted , too expensive to produce i guess. only 300 were made . this one is number 26
i put a period scope mount on it , so now its a wannabe Mi Garand sniper.22 lol

Yes , it is a rare bird , but far more than 300 were prob'ly made . They were stamped during production on the buttplate underside and the wood stock , prob'ly to remate them after finishing / staining which was done after fitting .These numbers start at 1 and the highest recorded on the list is 238 , but we have multiple duplicate numbers up to a current maximum of 4 . We have a list of just under 100 rifles .This would indicate a run of close to 1,000 , assuming 4 runs of 250 each .I have a nice one , though it is missing the front band . I have a ny-tie on it now.

well it looks like Manton Arms in Birmingham were making them (Mk 9 royal navy version ) as late as the 1990s apparently excellent rifles and a fine reproduction for the collector and shooter of such long arms ,
so its not an original issue ,regardless its a beautiful example of a Mk 9 and i shall treasure it.

it would appear the proof date on barrel is T=1968 and the earlier proof pre conversion is
O=1963
