Not much Enfield either if it is a UN numbered one! But that having been said, like the old prodigal son, it finally made good.
And it speaks with a pronounced German accent!!
A bit of history regarding the upgrade modifications from A1 to A2. MOST of the important mods were actually identified and developed here, at Shrivenham under the eye of Lt Col Mike xxxxxx, REME WO2 Ray xxxxxx and Dr Dave xxxxx. The ejection opening port was another big (small but v-important) one they did - as was the paddle cocking handle that we'd been playing around with for ages. I think that the only additional one developed 'overseas' was the heavy hammer. So next time anyone tells you that another nation had to put it right, tell them that that is not absolutely correct. Another nation simply had the facilities to put it all together in one big FTR package.
There were two more superb modifications that were looked into but not adopted due to cost factors. The best was spiral ribs, similar to a Sterling SMG breech block, up the length of the guide rods to keep sand and dust and therefore friction away from the reciprocating parts.....
