See lots of base removal information. Windage knob has a small set screw which does not want to come loose. Does this engage a flat on the windage screw? Is it full size or head with reduced diameter shank? Can the windage knob be pried off without damaging the transverse windage screw ? Might have to drill it out? Thanks.
Here's an exploded pic I found to maybe help you.
You will need a very small, but strong screwdriver to get that small set screw out. Soak it with a good penetrant, take your time. The set screw will come off, but take your time. You will likely damage the knob and other parts if you try to force it off. Good luck.

How has the project gone? Just my $.02, but I have not seen a staked in sight, yet. But they are always in very tight.

The way they're staked looks like an extension of the screw slot. Use a small diamond point chisel to clean the upset material out. Works every time, doesnt look bad and all reusable. The screw tip enters a hole drilled in the tip of the pinion. No, don't try to pry it off.
Could also select a slightly larger drill bit too.
