There's something amiss there. The 1 in M1 is re-stamped as is the S in Springfield. The period after the U in U.S. is missing...the word Springfield is a mess. The lines from machining on the tail are gone between top and bottom. That would suggest the whole thing was polished down and altered...

In the early days of production, the serial number of a scrapped receiver was re-used. That would almost have to be done manually. here's a notation from the notebook of the foreman of Assembly:
724 - Scrapped for bolt dropping out of rear of receiver April 28, 1939; replaced by new receiver same number
Later, of course, scrapped receievers were just passed by.
Looks exactly like many of them I have on file in the early days. I see nothing wrong. Rick B
