M1917 marked 2E8 or 2-8 ?

My 1917 has a stamp near the toe of the stock, which looks like a "2E8", or "2 7 8" (with the 7 rotated 90deg ccw). Any clues what that may indicate?

The SN is 7544xx (late 1917 manuf.), with a 6-18 barrel, rebuilt at Raritan Arsenal (RA-P).

Odd stampings and have not seen anything similar.

What I do note is the barrel is not original to the receiver. They don't spread out that far.

Stock looks cracked?
