Hi,
Trying to improve the accuracy of my 1943 Longbranch No.4 Mk1*.
I have read Peter Laidlers excellent article "Worn Draws in your No.4 or 5 fore-end" on how to repair the angled draws in the fore-arm woodwork.
The question I have is: should there be a gap between the bottom of the recoil lugs and the woodwork? The pictures in Peter's article seem to show that there is.

Fitting a stock tightly and properly is frankly one of the most frustrating and complex jobs, I have ever tried to do. I'll admit I am a failure, so I went an easier way.
Do you want to be authentic? If so then yes wood. Assuming the forewood you have is original and serial number stamped, I would suggest if you can afford it, buy a spare forewood and practice on that first would be my suggestion. The one below is a SA contract wood replacement stock with sucky colour and bad machining converted to a mk2 config from mk1. So my original is still as is right now.
Personally I replace work draws with blocks of brass that can be packed to get the rifle to sit "right" but Aluminium will do fine, just dont use steel screws to hold them in place!!!!

I notice that the draws in your pic don't seem to be angled.
Are they used as a base/backing for the angled section.

From what I recall reading somewhere the angle is 70 degrees and the line of wood behind those brass shims (Draws) appears to be about right. But I agree with getting a second hand sportered stock bottom wood and practice on that and remember the old adages - measure twice cut once - if in doubt ask as people like Peter Laidler and Brian Dick and others are only too willing to assist or as you have done look up the threads
