My first K98......Or?
Hello all.
I have just got my hands on a very nice WWII mauser.
The mauser looks like a standard K98, but it has NO stamps from nazi Germany.
Only the old imperial eagle.
The stock is just like a K98, but more well made, lighter. The hole gun is more well made than those I have seen.
The receiver is stamped with S/24G.
Serial number is 2509. On side of the action it is stamped with MOD.98.
Under the rear sight and the floor plate it is stamped with K 167.
The stock has the same number as the rifle. On the pistol grip it is stamped with the number 3.
Why?
Is it a early K98 production?
I have dated it, not sure if it is right to 1935.
Any information on the rifle will be good.
Will take some photos later and post, and also do a day at the range. The barrels are just as new:)

impossible to say exactly what you have (all matching? Russian/Yugo capture?) until we see pics but:
s/42G was the code for Mauserwerke Oberndorf. 1935 IS the year of manufacture. They didn't stamp the year until 1936. It would have NO Swastikas on it. They didn't adopt that until 1938. Until then, it was the Weimar eagle. the "K" under the rear sight is a stamp acknowledging that part is not for the full length Gewehr (G98), but the shortened Karabiner (K98).
the serial number on the stock can say a lot. if it's on the underside of the butt, it's a German stamped number. Russians and Yugoslavians put it on the left side of the stock. the "3" sounds like a manufacturer's mark. they used various stamps early on.

It's an early K98k made by Mauser, Obendorf in 1935. Great find!

From what I am told, it has not been used after -43.
Stored in a dry place. The barrel is very good, so I can not wait to take it to the range.
What is the #3 stamped on the pistol grip, sorry for the bad photo?

Very nice. It's probably been like that for decades, but the lower band is on backwards.

Very nice rifle and scarce. If it is all matching serial numbers personally I wouldn't shoot it. That's what they sell Russian capture K98's for.
