The thread went nuts
There was a 1930s case of ammo shown found with it
Then the thread was removed
Never discussed again.
Anybody remember?
What was the scoop
Troll?

Sounds like a good example of one...
There was a story or rumor, that was circulating around the end of 2007 concerning a gas trap rifle. The story was about a high ranking official (not military) that was allowed to obtain a new gas trap rifle on loan to test out (without any receipts). For some unknown reason, this rifle was never returned and apparently not missed either. This rifle surfaced around 2007 with the story, the serial number was supposed to be in the 34K number range. This story first appeared on jouster.
Rcs, Im trying to think back. I remember one being found in Oregon or Washington if I'm remembering right. I'll check my old notes to see what I come up with.
Kevin, There was s/n 28033 that was found in Michigan in early 2008
Rcs, I may be thinking of a different rifle. I can't seem to remember the exact details. I do remember it started out as a question to value from someone saying they found a gas trap. I beleive a gun shop got it on consignment. Then a couple people were able to see it and confirm that it was a gas trap. The next I heard it had sold for its true value. There was probably a write up in the gca. I flipped through my old csp notes and didn't find what I was after. But the serial number range is about right. Did you ever get any info on the gas trap that cmp supposedly found? I've heard about one, but have never got any details.
Do you recall if the story had to do with a Texas ranch owner that was good friends and a hunting buddy of V.P. John Garner ? Garner is said to have sent his hunting buddy a new M1 rifle to "check out" along with a wood box of ammo to use. The rifle stayed in the ranchers possession and was later given or bought by the father (another hunting buddy) of the person that ended up with it. This person is said to have taken it to a gun shop in about 2005 or 2006 and was told it was worth about $ 400.00. Luckly a friend of his got wind of it, checked it out, and advised him of the true value. As of 2010 it is said to still be in his possession. The rifle is said to be in the 12xxx serial range. Last I heard was that the "friend" was trying to get the owner to allow him to write a story on the rifle for the GCA but, as I have not seen the story, I guess he was not successful.
