Model 1910 Sporter scope solution

Hello all,
I`ve lurked about for some time and have enjoyed reading the posts and gaining knowledge on these great rifles. I currently own two 1910 Sporters and hunt and shoot with them. Age caught up with me and the eyes don`t do iron sights anymore. Didn`t want to poke any holes where they didn`t belong so fashioned a set of mounts that did not require drilling the rifle. The front mount is a Stith 7/8 tube with the extension as used on Mausers and others to reach the rear sight dovetail. To achieve a level scope, spacers made from brass were used to increase the height. The rear mount is a portion of a Redfield junior base for an 03 Springfield.It was cut and is positioned backwards to allow clearance for the windage adjustment screws. It is mounted to the dovetailed filler blank on the rear bridge. It was blind drilled and tapped from bottom side of filler blank to keep the base from rotating.The filler blank was drilled and tapped from the topside and a single screw through the base and blank gives upward pressure on the blank dovetails and creates a solid attachment. The rear ring is a Redfield and the scope a Lyman Alaskan with post reticle. Using old scopes like the Alaskan without perma centered reticles is always a challenge and I was lucky with this one .The post is perfectly centered at zero at 100 yards.
The other Ross is awaiting a scope also. Have always wanted to duplicate the Joe Kidd rifle so am leaning toward an A5 for it. Same process of using the rear bridge filler blank and rear sight slot to afix the bases will be used. Now if someone could tell me how they accomplished the takedown feature I`d be on the way.

Nicely done sir. On the other 'Joe Kidd' version, are you planning to make it take-down like the move rifle?

Would sure like to make it a takedown . Of the photos I`ve been able to find of that rifle it is a bit difficult to tell how it was done.

That is a nice job indeed and looks familiar somehow...

The Joe Kidd rifle seems to break in the wrist of the stock.

The A5 would be a good choice: the right vintage and look. The distance between the bases will affect the adjustments of course. The recoiling mount like the A5 or other target scopes is a good choice where the mounts can't be very strong as in this case.

Looks like you've got the US model M-10 with the more sharply drooped bold handle.

Surpmil, Thanks. As I told you in the PM, I posted the photos and details on the Rossrifle forum a few years back, so that may be why it looks familiar. Was hoping to share the idea for members here that had not seen it and also get some input/info on my planned project of the Joe Kidd rifle.
Really like the setup with the Alaskan and it shoots very good with the reformed brass from 348 Win that I bought from Buffalo Arms years ago before it went way up. Groups are better with standard 7mm .284 bullets of 120 to 140 gr than with the 154gr .287 bullets from Buffalo. With the second Ross, I acquired a supply of Huntington brass correctly headstamped and a supply of 160 and 175 gr Woodliegh .287 bullets. I am expecting tighter groups with them and will give a range report in the future.

Finally had time to do some shooting. As mentioned I was interested in comparing the .284 off the shelf 7mm bullets with the .287 bullets from Buffalo Arms and the Woodleighs I had acquired. Velocity difference between the Woodleigh .287 160gr bullet and Speer .284 160 gr with same load and powder was around 100fps.
All rounds were shot with post of the Alaskan held at bottom of the diamond. Only one real alibi with the 160WL`s and I believe that was me not the rifle or bullet. Minute of deer with most of them with the 175WL and the 160 Speer at top of my list to go hunting.
I didn`t load any of the Huntington brass yet.These were all Buffalo Arms 348 Win converted cases. Lost two with split necks even after annealing. Those cases have been reloaded numerous times and considering the reworking when formed from the 348`s am not surprised.

Thanks, I'm looking at different ways to mount a period scope, to my 05 Long heavy barrel target rifle, and this will work perfectly on mine, without spoiling a thing. Thanks for the images and idea's, obviously works well. Nice Rifle.

Glad that it was helpful for you. I have an A5 Winchester that I`m negotiating a trade on so may have the start of the "Joe Kidd" rifle soon. Maybe will just leave the other sporter a non takedown unless someone comes up with a DIY process and the source for attaching hardware.

Thanks for all, I have the same sight mounting Bridge on my rifle, and after taking a closer look at it, from referring to yours. I could see that at one time a Dove tailed mount had been installed on it. The perpendicular dovetail cut into the reinforce, and center punched to all hell made it just look like some ham fisted bugger had done this, but not so it's about the right size for a German scope's claw footed mount to slide right in there with a bit of solder to hold it once centered. Amazing how seeing something from a a different perspective, can make you see more clearly, thanks. Ian
