Krag I.D.? What do I have?

Had this rifle for several years now. Given to me by a Friend who got it from his Brother-in-Laws Pawn shop when it closed down over 20-30 years ago. He didn't know what it was.

I've ran about 100 rounds through it and it performs flawless. Bore is great. Action is tight and smooth. Hits where you aim it. There are several coyotes that found that out here on the farm.

The stock has had a pistol grip installed ( don't care for it, but is has been nicely done). The fore end has no hand grooves. Barrel 21.5 inches from receiver to tip. Front and rear sights have "Pacific" stamped on them. Scope mount has only a "2" stamping.

Serial # puts it at an 1899 manufacture. I also have a box of parts that includes the original rear sight.

Sounds like you already know what it is. It appears to be an 1898 rifle that's had the barrel cut down and the wood cut down. The hand guard has been discarded and the rear sight removed. The front sight appears to be a 1903 Springfield sight and the rear is a peep mounted to a fixture in the magazine cut off hole. The scope mount also has been drilled and tapped into the receiver so you can't see what model it is without removing that...which you've done to read the serial number. The addition of the pistol grip to the small of the butt was fairly common. As you know it's 30-40 caliber...the sling appears to be a cast off Russian... Shooter's value only on this one.

The non-grove forearm and short barrel had me puzzled. Someone has done such a nice job on the crowning that it looked "factory".
I just couldn't find any references of a carbine without the groves. The shortened barrel explains it.
As I stated. It's been/is a "truck" gun.
Suits me just fine.

We have a couple of members here that use Krags exclusively for hunting and one man has taken many elk with his over the years.

No doubt.

Although, no elk, I've done some pretty good Whitetails, bunch of coyotes, feral hogs and such.
Been a Milsurp guy for 47 years. Every thing I've shot has been done with a Mausers 7mm, 8mm, Israeli 308, with the occasional .303, 7.7 Jap, or the Krag.
