Is there someone knowing what was used as sights (optical?) on those Norwegian M53/17 ?
They will show up soon on the Canadian surplus market but I can't figure out the rear sight / optical sight they would have used with them.

This rifle is not a Norwegian one (unless it has a cutout at the front receiver for the cartridge). The M53 designation is also not Norwegian, but Danish. Denmark received a lot of rifles also from Norway, therefore it still can be that it was once Norwegian.
The cutoff of the rear sight base was done because many of these rifles were used among the Sirius sledge patrol in Greenland. They added a dovetailed v-notch to the barrel, if it's not present on the barrel you should remove the handguard and check if it's there. I bet it is.
They changed the rear sight because of the snow - the small peephole got filled rather quickly. And the small v-notch can be cleaned rather easily with your hands.

I had a good idea these rifles are from the Sirius sledge partol program, but I couldn't find detailed pictures of the right sights... any close up pics of these?
I don't have the rifles in hand by now, they are not yet released, I had a peep sight on these lately. I will have a close check next time I have a chance.

I know this is an old thread but I just want to clear a misunderstanding.
The M1917 rifles or M/53 (17) as they are officialy named by the Danish military that are being used by the Sirius Patrol in Greenland does still have their original rear sights. The Sirius Patrol is a Danish military unit and uses the rifles in original condition as issued and they are as far as I know not modified in any way.
The M1917 rifles wtih cut-off rear sights are surplus rifles that were modified and sold to the local civilian hunters in Greenland via the Kgl. Grønlandske Handel which roughly translates into the Royal Greenland Trading company. The reason for the modification, as Promo correctly says, was because the hunters didn't want the peep sight as it was easily blocked by snow and ice. The modification was performed by Kgl. Grønlandske Handel who used a subcontractor to do the actual work. The Danish militay has not used rifles where the rear sight has been cut off.
And that makes sense too...
And not all Danish issue rifles were for the patrol or into other Danish civilian hands
Something like 5000 (as I recall from Ferris) have been brought back into US and while typical mixed up have the indicators on them of Danish issue.
I got one rifle that had the battle sight notch (not the Danish Return) cut into a V.
I suspect it was a hunting mod and maybe a range adjustment as they did not understand it was a battle site distance sight.
Another friend who dad passed it onto him and both hunted with it figured it out and they used the ladder sight for hunting. A bit awkward for that but he was fine with it.
