So Peter, can we quench or MAG barrels in the ditch? I didn't see that one in the pam...nice. Anyhoo, it seems to handle and operate about the same as the MAG so...and we can get the rate up to that which he had if we try...same-same. I don't feel ripped off with our C6. (MAG)

Nor the L7 and M240.

Make no mistake, I'd like to wring it out and then hand it back for his guys to clean...right about 1000 rds ought to do.

As someone living in Canada all I can say is "if only".

I have heard GPMG's going at that rate of fire when it's getting past midday on a Friday, everyone is waiting to pack up, tidy up and go home and no one is keen on waiting behind until the ammo storeman turns up to take in the unused ammo. And the ammo storeman most DEFINATELY doesn't want part boxes of opened ammo in his store where he has to account for each round instead of a sealed box!

I agree with you about the GPMG/L7/FN-MAG/M-240. A most mgnificent bit of kit. Well tried and tested in battle many times over many years. And better still, it ain't broke......... so why fix it? LONG may she reign

It's the MG4's big brother, nothing new really. Just scaled up for 7.62.

It's supposed to replace the MG3. If what I've been reading is correct, it is heavier than the MG3 and has a lower rate of fire.

I like the simplicity of MG42/MG3's recoil operating system. They are still in service with several nations. Not a bad record I'd say. Who knows, "Hitler's zipper" might surpass the Bren's record? ;)

But back to BAR's question in thread 3. Can we just quench a barrel in a nearby stream? I'd never really thought about that one and it was never actually taught. We'd just let it cool naturally. Mind you, by the time the second barrel had done its stuff, the first barrel will still be pretty damn hot - so the stream it goes I'd say I'd say - but.......!

So here's a question for JM Paul and the other metallurgists. Given that we don't know the metallurgy of the barrel but it won't be a spectacularly new steel or expensive, is there anything dangerous (accept scalding for the unwary of course) or inherently wrong with dunking a red hot MG barrel. After all, at, say, 12-14,000 rounds max. it's toast anyway
