CMP M1 Garand
Looking forward to learning about the CMP M1 Garand I just purchased. We stopped in at the Anniston AL store Friday and was able to purchase it on the spot. I would have brought it home but saved the sales tax by waiting till Tuesday to get it. It is the last of three guns I have always wanted to own the first being a 357 Mag. My choice there was a S & W 686 7 shot with a 5" barrel, next was a 30-30, my choice there was a Henry H0009B with the brass receiver and now the M1. I got to shoot an M1 in the Navy back in 1965, only shot it a few times but that was enough to get me hooked just took a long time to get one.
My first question is regarding Ammo, I bought 200 rounds from CMP and 25 clips, its a start but is there better from a different source at reasonable prices? the stock is new and while I am a fairly good woodworker I'm not sure I want one of my high-gloss finishes on this rifle, what might some of you suggest?
I will look forward to hearing from some of you.

Most use an oil finish on M1 rifles. No need for a build up of material, just Tung for instance...I use Watco Danish oil myself.

Second the suggestion to use Watco Danish oil - it's all I use. I get it at Home Depot.

I use Formby's Tung Oil, diluted with a little paint thinner. After every coat, including the final coat, I rub with 0000 steel wool; you don't want a shiny look to the wood.
I suggest an inspection book for any M1 rifle owner: Scott Duff's "The M1 Garand: Owner's Guide".
