L42A1 CES Question

Hi All,

When did the Scout regiment telescope with the leather case get replaced with the steel can telescope and what is inside the steel can?

Are there any floating around?

It's not a steel can Marty, it's a plastic tube thinggy. Inside, it's the same old Scout Reg scope! Happened in the late 70's/early 80's. They looked at replacing the metal No8 box with a moulded plastic one at the same time but all efforts failed because the corners (square and rounded) failed.

Incidentally, the Ordnance price for a plastic one is over £100. Or it was up to a couple of years ago when they were available. They are still in the system along with telescopes but not issued now. Replaced in the 90's by a 'SWIFT' scope that wasn't dust or moisture proof!

I picked up mine about 7 or 8'ish years ago from a dealer in the UK. I believe I paid 80GBP at the time. It is constructed of high impact plastic, internally lined with plastic foam and keeps out the water well. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find another one. To quote one our own, they appear to be as rare as "rocking horse poop":lol: I liked to look of it but really don''t know if it would be appropriate for my CES chest. They may have been issued too late to have seen service alongside the L42A1's:dunno:

Again guys, buy the books. The CES, the user handbook and addendum which shows you how to use the sling. The 1976 Infantry Training Pam is also an excellent read in itself. BDL LTD Rifles and Accessories.

Almost forgot, I have the user handbook and Infantry training pam on the IWS night sight too!

You're dead right Flight RN. The plastic tube thinggy (see, more of those technical REME Officer-like terms again...) was a direct replacement issue for the L42 CES. Plenty were issued to complete the L42 CES but were taken from the kits prior to disposal. Apparently a big load were disosed of some 10 years ago when nobody really knew what they were................... I expect that there are a load of chippies (that's another quaint old English term for 'carpenters' .....no, not the singing duo!) using them to carry nails in!
