U.S. armory 03' stock scraping?

Hey guys,

Have a stock on a rifle that I was told had been boned. Learned through posting on our last home that I had no idea what boning was (Thanks for the lesson Jim T.) . After studying 03's for almost a year now, think that the stock was scraped. It is dull and smooth (Think boning is a very shiny finish), it's on the rifle at the bottom in the last photo I posted here. Haven't seen another stock in person that has the same finish.

Could be wrong :) , but wouldn't think that soldier's in the field would or would be allowed to scrape a stock.

Remember scraping cow horns as a kid with a piece of glass, but know that wood workers use a piece of steel with a fine sharp lip to scrape wood to a very smooth finish.

Did armories or armorers wherever scrape stocks with steel or glass, and if so was this a common practice or specific to some period or service branch in the 03's history?

(1) Yes. Armories and armorers did indeed scrape stocks with steel or glass.

(2) The practice was very common and, to my knowledge, was not isolated to any particular armory, group of armories, or service branch.

It didn't just happen at armories. I was in the last cycle to use M14's in basic training (1969) we spent an entire morning boning the stocks of the rifles prior to soaking them in cosmoline for turn-in.

Very common activity for basic training.

I used an M14 in bootcamp in the spring of 1970 (Parris Island). I also qualified with an M14. Much better rifle than a M1. Went to ITR and was issued a M16.
