The attached photo is of the father of a friend, who served in WW1. He is far right, front row - the Lance Corporal with the Marksman badge. Also shown is a medallion which has 2 crossed No4 rifles on it. Anyone know what this is? The father also served in the Home Guard in WW2, so maybe it was from his time in the Home Guard?
An interesting find, being No 4's it would have to be from his time in the Home Guard, common practice for marksman to be issued an accoutrement to be worn on the sleeve or shoulder of their uniform to denote that they had attained marksman status along with a small yearly stipend.

The Home Guard were not issued with No.4s and the Home Guard would probably have been disbanded by the time of this medal. However many Home Guard units transformed themselves into civilian rifle clubs after WWII. Our local rifle club is one.
The medal looks civilian to me - NRA? It is certainly not a British Army marksmanship badge to be worn with uniform.
What does the other side of the medal look like?
Can anyone identify the regiment by the cap badge?
It was said that the supply of weapons within the home guard was generally via the old boy network. And that was very similar to lend-lease - only on a larger scale!
The WW1 unit was The Civil Services Rifles. I don't know what is on the other side of the medal, because I have only seen the photo too, but have asked that question of my friend.
I did an extensive online search and the only other thing I found was a picture of a spoon that contained the same crossed rifle design - some shooting competition prize?

I won many a "Shooting Spoon" when we were still allowed target shooting competitions this country. So I stick to my original comment that is it is a civilian shooting trophy.Quote:

I guess that you are referring to the Shooting Spoon on "that auction site". On the contrary. The NRA Services Meeting is where just such competitions were held back then. Only service members were allowed to shoot but the Meeting was held by the NRA, a civilian organisation.Quote:
