K98 History Help Please...
I recently picked up a K98 at an auction and can't quite figure out it's history. It's a total mix master that started life as a 1944 JP Sauer (CE 44 with appropriate serial number and waffenamts) and is definitely an arsenal re-work but I can't figure out by whom. The waffenamts are still present and are not defaced. It has "R 1045" stamped on the right side of the receiver. On top of the receiver (in addition to the original cartouches) it has a triangle with what appears to be an "A" in it and another stamping that is either a poorly double struck triangle with another code or a mix of something else. It's possible somewhere in that garbled stamping there is the remnants of an "X" that was overstruck but looking at it in hi-def I don't think so. The butt plate is stamped "R 17035" and the wood under the butt plate is stamped with a code (perhaps BH or BR) and a date code of "3 2 41". The only other stamp I can find on the stock is a circle with an "R" in it and a 3 leg character (see pic). It does have the sight hood and the capture screws present but no cleaning rod. It does not have any import markings. Searching the web I have been unable to find any reference to similar re-work markings.
Anyone have any ideas to help me along?
