A gun dealer friend of mine calls over to me today....'Hey! I've got an old German rifle you'll probably want!' He was right..a 1901 Danzig Gew98. No Turk markings, no import markings, I'd say definitely a bring back. Then he asks me 'you want a good winter project?' To which I say 'Yeah?' so he gives me this 1917 artillery Luger barreled slide and frame. Guess where all my money is going in the next few months....

You aren't the only one wishing for friends like that. I can't complain too much though, I've had some nice things given to me in the past. That luger would turn into a serious money pit at my house.
I can't complain too much I have had a few things gifted to me as well along woth some items sold to me at very reasonable prices. Even had a couple on need parts for the competing of projects gifted by a couple of fine folks here.

hAVE BEEN Doing some light cleaning on the Danzig..a few things have popped up. Disassembled and cleaned the bolt today to discover that under all the crud, the original serial number on the root of the bolt handle has been lined out and stamped on the knob with a matching number to the rifle. Also, on the bottom of the stock just above the the rear sling swivel, there is a four digit number, which does not match the rifle, but there is a two digit number that matches the last two of the rifles serial number. There is some really pretty fire bluing left on the lange vizier sight as well ( don't think the camera picked it up too well ) If only they could talk..
Nice old rifle...I've stripped a few over time for cleaning and found perfect bluing underneath the wood. Take you to the time when the whole rifle looked that way. Now if you can find a sling and hangers...? Maybe bayonet?
I have fired my 1917 GEW98 in 2-3 matches. These are 58 round matches and a lot of fun. There is a real issue with the Lange rear sights. They get very hot and seize up. I'm stunned the Germans didn't find that out until the combat of WWI. They gun performs very well, but shooting Turk 7.92mm ammunition really kicks the rifle into your shoulder. This round is a direct copy of German WWI ammunition and gives the shooter what life was like in WWI.
My 1904 Danzig has been arsenal counterbored but still shoots great. It will still bring home the venison
