What is this Mauser?

The story goes that a friends grandfather was on of the first into Germany during WW ll. His unit "blew that safe at the Mauser mansion". One of the bring backs is the Mauser shown in the attached pics.

Looks like a civilian version of a K98. What I find curious is the "U.S. 1906" on the receiver. The gun is in unbelievably nice original condition.

Commercial sporting rifle made by Mauser....chambered for 30-06. Pretty pricey rifle, I'd imagine.

Thanks Anzac. That makes sense with the caliber marked as "7.6" on the side of the barrel and then the "U.S. 1906" on the receiver.
Certainly easy to find lots of ammo options if the owner chooses to shoot it.
This vet also pulled a near mint C96 out of the "Mauser mansion". Owner indicates it's in a 9mm long caliber. Has ammo he took with the gun. I will post pics of that separately in handgun section.
