I saw a like new sniper in the transit chest that is completely matching, including the scope tin. The rifle is an m47c, 1944. The rifle lacks the S51 stamp on the underside of the pistol grip. The rifle is perfect in all other regards, having all the expected markings. How common is this?

Very common. The butt was probably changed to fit the sniper.

While we're on the subject of S51 stamps I have a T that has the S51 barred out. 3 lines thru it. No obvious evidence of it being tampered with anywhere else. All the screws are properly staked and has all the right markings where they need to be. Google has failed me on an explanation.

& I've got a butt from a very early conversion in which the S51 is noticeably smaller than the standard font. Never say 'always' or 'never' with Enfields!

The rifle has the "T" on the body side?
