The three AP rounds in the clip have an extra cannular is there a reason for this could it be for a reduced load to seat the projectile in the case deeper! Do not know H/Stamp 42 S L Thanks
The others are an orange tip the sunlight makes them appear yellow.
I was once told the extra cannelure was to allow bullet jacket a place to flow when it was starting down the barrel. Don't know about that. They needed an overall length which would be constant, never made a reduced load and shortened the cartridge. If they made a reduced load, they'd have used a different powder that would as close to fill the case as possible. '42 Saint Louis...standard fodder. I guess the guys in Korea used this stuff almost exclusively.
The US Army adopted the M1 AP round in 1934 . Due to problems they replaced it with the M1A1 AP in 1938 . Continuing problems lead to the acceptance of the M2 AP in 1939 . It was basicly a return to the M1922 AP that the M1AP replaced.
Early M2 AP had the extra cannelure to ID it as M2 . This continued till '41 or so . After that , the date on the case head ID'd it as M2 , and the extra cannelure was dropped.
