C1 Leitz scope

I've been offered a commercial C1 (1962) and also a C1 Leitz scope in very good condition in its can. How common are these (the scopes I mean)? Anything to watch out for with them that's unique to them? Considering the C1 are prohibs and the Libs are back in, the rifle may be a bit too much money and not the wisest investment at the moment, but the scope may be of interest.

Not much to worry about with them. I was issued one in '75/'76 overseas and that's another story. Collectorwise, they aren't common. Shooterwise, they're only a marksman's optic. But we aren't supposed to be shooting our FNs anyway. That would never happen would it? It looks good from here, if the optic appears clear, you should be good. They were durable enough if nothing else...

I bought a half dozen of the scopes back in the late 1990's and sent them all back to Leitz in Nepean, Ontario, (now gone I think), for normal servicing. I agree with Jim that they are strictly a marksman's sight but they are an interesting collectable and very useable. Glad I hung on to one of them.

Serial 1526 C1 Leitz is on Ebay now for $2700 US. Not too bad condition but overpriced by about $1500 US. I have seen these sell for $1200 US.
The Leitz scope is occasionally seen in the US and usually snapped up by collectors.

Interesting...another pre-1968 rifle with the "late" mag well cut. If I may ask, what series is the rifle serial number? 6L, 8L, etc?

What the seller has told me is that the rifle was a commercial production, special order, with no military markings on it. It has an "EX" serial number.

That's interesting...I've seen a few references (paper and photographic) to other made-for-civilians C1s, and they all had stock-standard serials. Can anybody else here comment?

That's ALL I've seen, standard serial numbers. Didn't matter whether OPP or RCMP or DCRA...they were rifles taken right from stock for sale. Now if this one had been procured some other way, I'd expect the number to be changed, erased...altered.
