Picked up a inland today

It is just a shooter. The funny thing is below the serial number is a -X. Big Bubba says you have to take away ten from the serial number to get the real serial number. Can this be right? The serial number is 5,550,16x then the -X.
The strange thing is looking now at another Inland I have had for years is the same thing, another -X.
It is 5,557,46x-X. So I guess this is a common mark. No big deal. Anyone know who or when this was done?
I did find another one I have, It's a QHMC 4,800,01x-X. So I guess every manufacturer had these -X carbines.
Big Bubba says he has seen carbines with -C, -L and a -M. I think he has been drinking too much of his home brew.
I only have a few carbines and three of them have this -X. Strange.

Those letters are all Roman numerals - meaning the carbines were used in Italy (but not by the Romans).

The X marked Inland receivers were serial number overruns; Winchester in this case. I believe it's not known what the X means on QHMC carbines from a CCNL I read. Winchester used a D for their duplicated serial numbers. Is the X at the far right of the serial number at or towards the bottom?

There are several known Winchesters with a D added. There is a sketch in one of the CC NL.

Roger? yes, I have seen D marked. I am questioning the D meaning it is a duplicate number. I do not think there was any documentation to the fact and no duplicate numbers have been recorded in this case.

So you are saying you have 2 inland -X serials? and a QHMC to boot!

Could it be more definitively stated as saying no one knows what the D means, but general speculation is that it means duplicate? Maybe a better way to say is why not? Other companies duplicated them so why not Winchester? Is this a case where something has been repeated so many times that it has become fact?

I have one of seven or eight known QHMC -X carbines to exist. There was one recorded in the CC data files before the Greek returns. It was an unknown vagrant. Just having one was no proof Bubba did not do it. I went to Aniston and worked there four days and I handled 4,800,012-X. There were about five or six QHMC -X carbines found in the 60K Greeks with low of 12, mine and to a high of 1447. So there could be about 1,500 of them.
When it came up at auction about five years later I bought it. The Inland 5,557,46x-X I also bought on CMP auction. The 5,550,16x-X I bought from a private seller last week.
I know of one other carbine hoarder who has these three -X guns, also.
I have one of the 950K range Inland X guns also but they are very common. On those the X is after the serial number and not on the flat. I also bought it from CMP auction. So I only have four X carbines and no D carbines.
Don't you feel sorry for me?
And Underwood/B 2,650,xxx would have a 12-43 UN barrel.
