Hi Fedorthedog, welcome to the forum. Some of the most knowledgeable carbine people here. Detailed pictures of your carbine will help determine the value. SFPD, San Francisco Police Dept.? Didn't the guards at Alcatraz use carbines?
Best Regards.....Frank
Great guess Frank. But Alcatraz was a Federal Prison. It wouldn't surprise me if SF had some carbines in the 50-60s. It was a normal big city in those days with a good professional police force (don't ask how I know). Today it is Rome in its final days. There was a lot of political unrest in the bay area in those days especially in Berzerkly and Oakland, but SI Hayakawa had the natives restless at SF State too. The NG was called out from time to time.
I guess it could be Santa Fe PD too huh?
During the riots of the mid 60's from L.A. to Detroit the government gave the Police departments carbines to combat the rioting. Many departments had hundreds of them and I would not be surprised if San Francisco got them too.
I took a Beretta Armorer's course hosted at the SFPD range and armory in about 2000. They had a rack full of MINT Colt Lightning 44-40 pump action carbines, still meticulously maintained. I did see some M1 Carbines there, also. In fact, they had Thompsons and even a couple BARs, IIRC!
