I'm reminded of a vet interview in the GCA Journal where a Combat Engineer heard German voices coming from a cellar and ordered them to surrender... something like 18 Germans came out with hands up. The GI was "armed" with only a mine detector but the Germans thought it was some kind of new weapon :)
My Great Uncle was a LT in the ETO.
He was going from point A to B on a motorcycle, clearing the top of the hill he was face to face with 250 Germans.
Being born in Germany and fluent in German they surrendered to him.
