does anybody know how to make a chassepot paper cartridge which is accurate AND allows you to fire the rifle without having to clean it after every single shot. i heard groups of 3 inches are possible at 100 yards but most shooters clean the bore after every shot.
why would the french military have used a rifle that had to be disassembled after each round?
Good Evening. I have been working with the Chassepot cartridges for a year and can tell you that the problem of chamber residue is a function of a paper cartridge with a musket cap at its base. I too would like to shoot without cleaning the chamber after each shot. My solution to this problem is to hold the muzzle pointing down and a quick puff into the chamber gets me 6 shots before I pull out the chamber brush. With my muzzleloaders, I can get to about 10 shots and then must do a major cleaning to get the fouling out. With the Chassepot, please remember that in the day one would still take the Chassepot over the muzzleloader for many reasons, and I can clean my chamber in about 15 seconds.
I do not shoot with a rifle stand. Using just my elbows, trifocals, and 60-year old eyes, I can get my Chassepot into the black at 50 yards. West brothers in England are the pros with the Chassepot and Dreyse with accuracy that is incredible.

i just have no idea how he does it and if his rounds are accurate.
I don't know if this is correct, but, for what it's worth: I watched a couple of Chassepot Utube videos by "Murphey's Muskets".
He states in one video that he treated the cartridge paper with borax, so that it does not burn. He further states that the residue leaves the bore, following the projectile, which leaves the bore quite clean. He seems to be able to get repeated shots without cleaning residue, except occasional cap remains off bushing at front of bolt.

I have been working with Nitrating my cartridge paper to increase combustion. So far the results, based on low concentration of the Nitrite solution, have not been worth the effort. Will be increasing the concentration shortly and will report back. Randy

Just back from the range and have a good report. Switched to using adding machine paper that came off a 2.5" roll. Paper is thinner than what I am using now and residue was significantly reduced. Please note I do use an internal skeleton for my cartridges which allows for this very thin and flimsy cartridge case. First-pull ignition on 30/30! Randy
Addendum: Paper was not nitrated. Looks like I will not need to Nitrate based on today's results. Randy
