I am inventorying manufacturer's markings on an M1917 I just acquired. I want to see how my safety lock cover is stamped, and as usual they stamp them on any surface but the exposed one! I've checked the maintance diagrams to see what all is in there, but I need to know if I can simply remove the part to check it out, or do I need to disassemble the whole safety lock. I'd like to just unscew it and then put it back on. I'm new to this weapon, so I thought I would check before I dive in.

Its an extremely difficult one to get out.
No it does not simply unscrew. Once its as stripped down as you can get you have to insert a a small screwdriver (and very tough) from the rear and press the plunger forward getting the indent out while at the same time sliding the lever itself out and over the screwdriver blade!
You have to play with it as there are several orientation surfaces involved and it has to be the right one. All that for one stupid part that they unreasonably stamped! They gave no thought to us future collectors.......
I have done it once on a good gun as I wanted to know what that last part was.
I had a play gun that I did it a few times on and I never got it to go easy.
If I remember right, if you turn the safety to where it points down on the receiver it is easier to remove. You still have to push on the plunger and remove the stock.
I think Berk is just asking about the cover, not the safety lever and plunger. The cover just unscrews and is long as you're not removing anything else you can put it right back on. The stock will probably have to be removed first. Salt Flat

Yes I was wrong part you were after, that one is easy to do.
Keep in mind the plunger inside is a marked part so the final confirmation of what you have is that one!
Sort of like the firing pin on a Lugar, why in the world you have to mark a firing pin?
