I am guessing the mounting hardware is not original?

We never had them of course but the thread on the nut might be too coarse and not vibration free. I'd be betting that there'd be an insert inside the casing like the Indians used for their secondary pistol grip on their L2A3 when it was fitted. Strangely, there was a programme here about the Indian railways crossing into Bengal and Pakistan. The guards had L1A1's, and L2 Sterlings fitted with the second pistol grip
