Day at the range

Had a good 6 hours at the range today with a friend shooting our rifles checking different loads for our planned shooting trip in the pipe line for the last 7 years.
I had my APRS 308, Savage 6.5/284 and a No.4 303 just to loose of a few rounds my mate took up a .222, 30/30 Improved on a 1898 Swede, 7mm Rem mag and his 460 Weatherby Mag
Had some good groups and I managed to poke 2 out of 4 rounds through a 1" hole in a plate at a lasered 214m with my APRS painted the plate with fresh bright green dye mark paint to pick up hits that missed the hole.

Anyway was a great day up until we fired his 460WM I had not shot it for 3 years and forgot to hold my mouth open when touching off the first shot just like the first time I fired it.
Good old enamel taste again from my teeth we had 4 shots each from it and as thats all the rounds he had for it we were pretty thankful to put it away.
After the 2nd round I was shaking actually so was he as we were undercover so suffered the concussion from the muzzle blast when letting them go.
I can recommend this cartridge to those that wish to clear their sinuses but steer clear if you cannot handle the 100lb recoil energy with each shot.
His load was a 500 grain Woodleigh in front of 126 grains of 2213SC Oh! deary me :yikes:

I take my hat off to you, biggest cartridge I have fired so far is the 416 Rigby.
A friend offered me the opportunity to fire his Mauser in 416 last year, I think is was a 400 gr load. I shot it standing and the recoil was enough to cause the scope to just kiss my brow, just the lightest touch, no cut or mark. It was an interesting experience especially as I'm only 76 Kgs ringing wet :eek:

Yes Kiwi Steve the secret is to roll with the recoil but I can honestly say it was damned awful fun as not often do you get to shoot such a cannon it really is a beautiful rifle with a custom stock as the original stock was just brutal on you with that high Weatherby comb.
Do you happen to know Nathan Foster in N.Z who owns/runs Terminal Ballistics my wife, son and I shot with him when in N.Z last in 2014 a great chap and a very hospitable family sharing a great day I heartily recommend to any one travelling to N.Z to look Nathan and his wife up he has written 4 books which I have and they are full on with in the field tests on game/reloading/bedding/actions/rifle so honest results gained from doing it.

The only other non factory rifle that even pales the 460WM and the 700NE is the 950JDJ which has 270LB+ of recoil the rifles weigh 110lb and only 2 or 3 were made by the designer here is the link to watch it on utube

I don't know Nathan Foster, but like you I own his books which are a very informative read, and I hope to do one of Nathan's shooting/hunting courses in the not too distant future.
I have also purchased some of his Match Grade bedding compound as well as Stock Stabiliser, both of which I can recommend as top notch stuff, easy to use with great technical backup.
