I tried years ago to dispel this myth, even went to the trouble of putting together extensive photo lessons and quoting maintenance notes, but still "the beast" lives on through this fool and his followers...

The discussion was about a replacement stock set for a Lithgow No1... the resident x-spurt, (called fast robert or something like that) posted this...

When you do find a replacement stock-set,make sure you do not have a stock bolt that is too long with your butt stock.
This can happen due the butt stock socket hole being a little too deep,washers missing from the bolt or the wood has dried out and shrunk over the last 70 years.
This is the most common expensive screw-up the owner does to destroy his forewood. The stock bolt when viewed with only the butt stock screwed down should extend beyond the receiver socket no more than two threads. More threads exposed will cause the end of the bolt to strike the back of the forewood and shatter the wood under recoil.
You can use steel washers to take up length inside the butt stock or grind down the bolt if you see this is a problem to shorten the bolt length. Stock bolts are cheap. Wood is not.
This video has nothing to do with the broken wood but he is very close to shattering his forwood due to the bolt protrusion.

I can not count the times I've had to fix or try to find replacement woods for shooters rifles over the years with this very preventable problem.

Yes I had a little laugh to myself when I read that this morning.
He's got no idea has he.

After 100+ years of development and a few wars and skirmishes in between with the Lee Enfield line all of a sudden this x-pert finds there is a problem!!! ( X = an unknown factor, Spert = A drip under pressure.)

Mind boggling.........

You really have to wonder what drugs some people are on. It isn't hard to work out that if a screw threaded bolt is wound into a screw threaded hole (butt socket) then it can't really move back and forth through that hole under recoil.... even if it could move through as if the threads were not there, there is nothing behind the bolt head to prevent it from just being pushed back with the slightest pressure....
Here are some of the pics I used to show these people, but it (and other things) just got me burned at the stake for witchcraft :dunno:

The conclusive act was when I proved the square on the front of the screw was not long enough to pass through the tie plate and reach the woodwork before the larger threaded part stopped it. :slap:

Do we need one? Sounds like advice from the grand master of stock shimming. I like how he also states how he doesn't know how many times he's had to fix or find replacement wood. I wonder if it was only because he didn't take the fore stock off first?
