If you have a Ross MkIII marked to the 16th Battalion CEF post your serial number here or PM me and I may be able to tell you the man it was issued to.
The serial number is a number group of 1 to 4 digits - usually three or four - and two letters, stamped in the side of the butt.
Marked CEF 16?
175/1915 GO. CEF 16. One of the ex-HMS Canada rifles, DA386.
Sorry, no hits for that number or anything like it. Almost all the numbers I have are "1915/D- ---"
As each two letter prefix was followed by numbers from 1-1000 (999?) one might wonder why a batch or two of the same prefix were not enough to equip a regiment, but things get jumbled up over time, moves, collection and re-issue, the amalgamation of battalions etc. etc.. There is a good deal of commonality in the letter prefixes recorded though.
